Use <ref>...</ref> inline, and put {{reflist}} under a == References == heading.

A reference should contain enough for a reader to find the thing: author, title, publication, year, and page or article number where it exists.

Named references let you cite the same work twice without repeating it. Do not cite a source you have not read, and do not cite a news article about a study when the study itself is available.
